First Day of School

I have to admit, motherhood has far exceeded my expectations in many ways. While the idea of being a mother has always been appealing to me, the reality of it is a far different matter. Yes, there are sleepless nights that roll into early mornings, yes there are temper tantrums that feel like earthquakes, but there are also the chubby hugs, the funny sayings, the drawings of people with legs and heads and no bodies, the endless stories, the imagination, the laughter and love given with reckless abandon, no strings attached...except maybe the ones pulling at my heart. And then there is the first day of school. Awe, the first day of school (be still my beating heart).
Madeline has wanted to attend school for the past year and a half. Every few days she would ask "today can I go to school?" and we would say, "when you are three". So on her third birthday she says, "today I can go to school!" and we say...after summer passes. So, hail to the first day of school. I had beautiful visions of 'the picture'. You know, the one in front of our house...the one that I will take each year as she changes and grows and our house changes and grows, and we will look at the pictures and sigh and wonder aloud 'how quickly time flies'. So where, you ask, is this first day of school picture? I DO NOT HAVE IT. Because another thing I have learned about motherhood- it never quite happens how you expect. And when you decide you want the classic 'first day of school picture' your child will decide, "today is a good day to run around and jump up and down and very decidedly NOT want your picture taken." On a plus note, she marched right up to her teacher, introduced herself and told me, "goodbye Mom, have a nice day". Sigh. Maybe next Tuesday I'll take another 'first day of school' picture...then 20 years from now we can laugh about how it was really a week late! Or.... maybe not.Running to pick dandelions-look how big her back pack is on her! But her aunt and uncle bought it for her for Christmas, and ever since she has been saying she would use it when she started school...and she has not forgotten! (too bad the first day of school also coincided with garbage day in our neighborhood! Nice backdrop :) )
Madeline would sit still long enough to take a picture holding her baby sister.

Back in the Saddle- Madelinisms

I have been gone a very long time. In this time we have moved. Semi-unpacked. Taken several pictures for Stillpoint Photography, particularly seniors ...oh yes, and been so sick I am sure it came straight from H-E- double Hockey sticks! So, rather than trying to play catch-up...onward.
I awoke a week or so ago to a sweet little Cherub's face, about 6 inches from my face. Her blue eyes wide she said in a whisper, "Mom, you have farkles on your face!!!" (note: sweet little Cherub needed to brush her teeth!)
At a recent nap time: Miss M: Mom, I am hungry! Can I have a snack? Me: Madeline, you already had lunch and a snack. Go to sleep. Miss M: Mom? Me: Sigh. Madeline, this is the last thing you get to say. Miss M: Remember Jesus? and all those people that came to see Him? Well, they were hungry, and He fed them! (this is Sunday School mutiny!)
And here are some particularly yummy cupcakes Madeline helped me to make: chocolate-coconut with a hint of orange in the frosting. They were intended to take over to our old neighbors. But then it rained. And we stayed home. And our bellies were hungry. Needless to say, we will soon be making another batch of 'particularly yummy cupcakes'. Maybe this time we should not make them so very yummy!

Lilacs and Little Buggers

So, every year I have intended to make my way down to Manito to see the showy array of lilacs in bloom, but I just never seem to remember or get around to it until most of the blooms are spent. This year the lilacs have bloomed so late that I have been dropping by every week or two just to see if they are even in bloom yet! Finally, they are...Culley, Madeline, Olivia and I enjoyed a lovely evening outing to the gardens to capture some pictures. Along with the intoxicating, heady scent of lilacs, we were greeted by an insane and unusual amount of mosquitos (for the record, they were NOT invited to our family outing!!!). So our leisurely stroll was more of a brisk walk and 15 minutes later we were back in our car (a bit 'bumpier' than before!) and headed to dinner instead. I am hoping it is not like this all summer, or camping, kayaking and trips to the river are going to be a bit miserable! Can you tell by this time our
girls are ready to go? Pesky Mosquitos!

Welcome, Olivia

Olivia Jane Anne Parris
After weeks of waiting for our sweet little girl, she is finally here. & ironically, after weeks of praying that she would not come early as she was suggesting she would, she not only came well past her due date (longer than her sister Madeline, even) but seemed intent on taking her time in labor, as well. So much for the second child being easier! Olivia means 'bringer of peace' or 'peaceful one', so I am hoping with time she will bear out the reflection of her name!! I have had a lot of people express wanting to know how the labor went- I will keep it very brief here for the general reading (I doubt my Grandpa or Dad really want the details :) ), and for those of our friends who adore the birth process, you can just write me individually if you wish to know more. For those who would rather know nothing, you can just jump down to the pictures...they are the best part, anyway!
less than 10 hours old
I did try the Castor oil method for inducing labor, twice- first time with no success, but I used such a minimal amount, that the night before I was scheduled for an induction that I still was not convinced I would follow through on, I took a chance and tried one more time, figuring 'why not?' I was feeling pretty restless that night, so Culley jokingly suggested we hadn't tried 4-wheeling (yes, that is a verb on the west coast!) yet. Madeline was staying at our aunt's house due to the aforementioned inductiont that was scheduled, and because there is a major thoroughfare about 5 minutes from our house that is torn up for a couple of miles right now, we figured it would be funny to say we had, anyway. Plus, Culley later admitted he figured it was the one time he could get away with driving like that over closed roads without any real threat of legal ramifications... hmm... So we drove over bumps and stumps for about half an hour, and while it was somewhat uncomfortable for pregnant me, it was also quite a bit of fun! One of the few times I have not been paranoid about 'breaking the rules'. (Sara will appreciate that).
About 2:30 am I woke up to feel the effects of the castor oil, but by 3:30 I was in full force labor, with contractions consistently lasting for 1 min+, about 3 minutes apart. At 7:30 we called the hospital to say we were on our way and at 7:45 when we checked in I was at 5 cm and 80% effaced....and here is where I Fast Forward to 9:30 pm, 14 hours later...I was still 80% effaced and had been at 8 cm for the past 7 hours...and Olivia was still not descending into the birth canal. My OB was becoming very concerned that I was not at 100%, and was concerned that I would start hemmorhaging, so after 19 hours of 'natural' laboring we made the difficult decision to have a c-section. Culley has described it as one of the most surreal experiences of his life- it was so crazy to make that decision and within another 30 minutes or so...there she was! Healthy and fit as a fiddle, weighing in at 9 # 3 ounces and 21 inches in length. It turned out she was turned posterior and her head was also 'stuck' in my birth canal, so most likely things would have continued to go downhill had we not opted for the c-section. While I am bummed to not have had another completely natural birth (I know some of you are wondering this) ultimately what I feel and am clinging to is gratitude. Gratitude that we labored as long and as well as we did, gratitude to have had such a wonderful partner as Culley to help me through it and look out for me, gratitude for an OB that I would trust (and do!) with my children's well-being to the utmost, gratitude for modern medical capabilities when necessary, and gratitude for our healthy, precious new little girl, OLIVIA JANE ANNE. Our God is very good indeed!meeting her big sister for the first time

The Prinz's Visit Parris

Here are just a few snapshots of a wonderful, whirlwind visit we had from Amanda and Corey last week. Madeline had a blast playing with her cousin Sera, and was pretty sad to see them go...a couple of days ago we were taking a walk (yes, to try and encourage Olivia to pay us a visit) when a plane flew overhead. Madeline loves planes in general, but this time she started jumping up and down, waving at the plane and yelling, " Hi, Uncle Corey! Hi! Come back and play with me! Hi, Uncle Corey!" I think another visit will have to be in the near future!
Uncle Corey reads bedtime stories.... and Miss Madeline feeds Sera whip cream- yum!
A visit to Aunt Cindy & Uncle Dale's to feed the goats- Sera was thrilled!
silly Uncle Culley makes the girls laugh on the Carousel Fun times at Riverside Park Who can resist an Easter Egg hunt, even if it was a few days late!

Easter Celebrations

Okay, I know that I am very behind in my blog/posts. Rather than drive Culley (and everyone else around me, for that matter) completely mad, I have been trying to use these last several days (i.e. eternity!)of waiting for baby O to make her appearance by doing all of the odds and ends that never seem to get done in 'real life'. Some may call this nesting- I don't really think it is- it is more just a desperate need to keep from going completely insane by ignoring everyday routines (sweeping, what is that?) and focusing on the random hodge podge that remains (reorganize my craft supplies and straighten up my linen closet- of course!) Anyway, here are some pictures from Easter at our house this year...it turned out to be a very enjoyable day together as a family, though a bit different from past years. I wasn't able to go to church in the morning with Culley and Madeline, and we didn't travel to see family because of the baby's due date. Still, it was a day of great celebration and rejoicing...how grateful I am to realize that in reality we celebrate Easter every day of the year, not just one Sunday out of 52! & in the midst of wishing this baby would come...that thought makes me smile!

Sunny Days

For the past week or so Madeline and I have been making the most of our spring weather (I am simply going to ignore the fact that it snowed Tuesday morning). I knew that sunshine was a good thing, but I don't think I have ever appreciated it as much as this year! If there is one plus to going over my due date, it is this time in the sun. From the look on Madeline's face, I think she must agree!

Welcome, Samuel

Here are a couple of recent pictures from a newborn photo shoot that I did on Saturday. I couldn't believe this little guy was just shy of a week- usually babies this age sleep throughout most of the shoot, but he was wide awake and alert...and completely non-plussed by all of the extra attention!
